The James Cook University facility at Cape Tribulation will be the venue for World Cassowary Day 2016.

Many environmental organisations, cassowary enthusiasts, and other threatened species groups will set up stalls and information displays to raise awareness of the plight and struggle for survival of both the cassowary and other species of animals that are under threat.

Happy Bird Day !!!!

World Cassowary Day has been running for three years now, the first inaugural event was in Kuranda in 2014.
The second World Cassowary Day was in Mission Beach last year in 2015 and us Cape Tribulation residents are proud to be the hosts of the 2016 World Cassowary Day.

An interesting fact is that Cape Tribulation was known as Kurangee by the Aborigines, and in their language this meant "Place of many cassowaries".
For quite some time it was an extremely rare occurence to see a cassowary around Cape Tribulation, but since around 2000 they have been making a slow but steady comeback.
2015 was a productive year for them, the cassowary couple that has their territory around Rainforest Hideaway and the rest of the street had a batch of four chicks this year, and around the end of the year another couple that often wanders around the car park at Cape Tribulation Beach had another two chicks.

We'll update this page soon, if you want to see some more cassowary pics and videos check out our Facebook page.
